A key member of the studio-affiliated EER project, Joe Dumit is an anthropologist of passions, brains, games, bodies, improvisation, drugs, and facts. His recent work on contact improvisation, practice as research, and embodied mindfulness has concentrated on how learning and training take place in bodyminds.
In the fall of 2023, Joe visited the studio in Berlin for five weeks and hosted a series of workshops on slownesses. To Joe, slownesses are not the opposite of speed, or even a speed at all; instead, they are a quality. Each kind of slowness is the answer to the questions: what am I present to right now? At what scale? How am I in relation to it? Who is the ‘I’ in this relation? This way of approaching relations to bodies, things, environments can shift our imagination, invite new questions, and offer us ways to play with our concepts and practices.
