Chasing the Light – A film by SHIMURAbros

This research project during SHIMURAbros’ residency at the studio continued their investigations into the ontology and language of film. A series of events are woven together through the focus on light as protagonist and power source in the cinematic process. The layering of events is translated into film through the simultaneous blending of three sources of lighting: an ancient coconut lamp, an amalgam of city lights, and the lightning setup during the recording. Playing with perception, the work emerges as an abstract picture until it slowly dissolves into a still-life image of the industrial scenery at the port of Singapore. With the support of NTU CCA Singapore. SHIMURAbros are the filmmaking sibling duo Yuka and Kentaro Shimura. Their work has been exhibited worldwide at venues such as the National Arts Center, Tokyo; the National University of Singapore’s Centre for the Arts, NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei; The Hessel Museum of Art and CCS Bard Galleries in New York; the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts; and Museums Quartier, Vienna.
